Malou Airaudo is in Turkey to share her choreographic approach and selections from her repertoire influenced by her work with Pina Bausch.
The Wuppertal Dance Theater experience, which began in the late 1970s under Pina Bausch’s direction as a City Theater, continues today as the Pina Bausch Company. Pina Bausch is the most important representative of neo-expressionism in dance that emerged in post-World War II Germany, building upon German expressionist dance. Malou Airaudo, who worked closely with Bausch since the company’s founding and continued to dance, create choreographies, and teach throughout her long dance career following the Wuppertal Tanztheater experience, will be in Turkey from May 20 to June 13. She will give classes in Istanbul and Izmir and participate in various events. Airaudo’s 6-day dance repertoire workshop will take place at çakSTÜDYO on May 23-28.
On May 22-23, Airaudo will conduct a two-day workshop on contemporary dance technique and repertoire with dance students at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Bomonti Campus (Modern Dance Department); on May 24-25, she will be at Studio Des Vu for a workshop aimed at actors.
From June 1-10, Malou Airaudo will be in Izmir-Seferihisar for the first time with an intensive repertoire and creation workshop in the open air among the olive trees of VadiManasır.

Following the company’s first production, FritzFritz, she appeared in Iphigenie auf Tauris, Orpheus und Eurydike, I’ll Do You In, Adagio, Café Müller, Bandoneon, Walzer, La Sacre du Printemps, Kontakthof, Keuschheitslegende, Blaubart, Arien, Auf dem Gebirge hat man ein Geschrei gehört, and Two Cigarettes in the Dark.
In addition to her work in Wuppertal, she continued to perform in the United States at the invitation of Manuel Alum. In 1975, she founded the La Main company in Paris with Jacques Patarozzi, Dominique Mercy, Héléna Pikon, and Dana Sapiro. In 1984, Airaudo was offered a professorship in Modern Dance at Folkwang Hochschule (now Folkwang University of Arts). In 2012, she became the director of the Institute for Contemporary Dance at Folkwang. Her work as a choreographer includes collaborations with Folkwang Dance Studio, Ballet de Lorraine, Grand Théâtre de Genève, and Renegade.
